Water levels on the rise at Mambedi Dam

Share this page:

Originally completed in June 1985, the dam failed in February 2000 following a period of extreme rainfall. As the need for water in the area increased we decided in 2017 to undertake repairs to the dam and spillway.

Construction started on 4 July 2017 and was completed in July 2020.

Mambedi Lower Dam is located on the Mambedi River, a tributary to the Luvuvhu River, on the northern boundary of our macadamia estate in Limpopo Province. The dam has a catchment area of 46 km² and a volume of 5 million m³.

This summer rains season has seen excellent rainfall leading to the dam filling from 35% to 85% from January to mid March.

Covering an area of 28Ha the dam has a total capacity of 4.1m3 of water. We are currently holding 3.5m3.

"Rehabilitating this wonderful water resource is essential for the future growth of our new macadamia orchard developments. Given the uncertainty of the impacts of climate change, it is critical that we have a sustainbale source of water. Bringing the Mambedi dam back on line will provide this assurance."
